USDOT Decal Size and Font Requirements (2026 FMCSA Rules)

USDOT Decal Size and Font Requirements (2026 FMCSA Rules)

FMCSA’s 49 CFR FMCSA marking requirements sets the legal floor for USDOT decal sizing; but a 2-inch decal that technically passes can still get you flagged for legibility. This guide covers the letter height, font, contrast, and placement rules every fleet should hit, plus the practical sizes our shop recommends for different sizing your USDOT decal.

Minimum Legal Size

49 CFR 390.21(c) requires:

  • Letter height: at least 2 inches
  • Visibility: readable from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stationary
  • Markings on both sides of the power unit

FMCSA does not specify width, weight (font weight), or stroke thickness, but inspectors interpret “USDOT decal cost” practically. Thin or stylized fonts at 2 inches frequently get cited.

Approved Fonts

FMCSA does not name specific fonts. Compliant choices in the field:

Font Inspector-friendly? Notes
Helvetica Bold Yes Industry default
Arial Black Yes Heavier weight, slightly squatter
Impact Yes Condensed but bold strokes
Roboto Bold Yes Modern alternative
Times New Roman Risky at 2″ Serifs blur at distance
Script / italic / decorative No Cited for poor legibility

Use CDL truck marking rules only for the USDOT number itself: mixed case is allowed for the IRP and IFTA decal requirements.

Contrast Rules

Letters must “sharply contrast” with the background. Practical rule of thumb:

  • Light vehicle (white, silver, light gray) β†’ black, dark blue, or dark red letters
  • Dark vehicle (black, navy, dark green) β†’ white or yellow letters
  • Mid-tone vehicle (red, brown, mid-blue) β†’ white letters; black does not contrast enough

Avoid metallic, transparent, or low-opacity vinyl on USDOT decals, they fail the contrast test even if technically the right color.

Recommended Decal Size by Vehicle Type

Vehicle Legal min Recommended height Why
Service pickup 2″ 2.5″–3″ Compact door area, but 2″ looks cramped after vinyl trim
Box truck / step van 2″ 3″–4″ Larger panel, decal needs proportional weight
Semi-tractor (sleeper or day cab) 2″ 3″–4″ Read from greater highway distances
Trailer 2″ 2″–3″ If trailer has its own DOT marking
Cargo van (Sprinter, Transit) 2″ 2.5″–3″ Door panel size dictates upper limit

Placement

Apply on both sides of the power unit. Standard locations:

  • Driver and passenger door panels (most common)
  • Below the side window for vehicles with no usable door area
  • Equal spacing from door edges (β‰₯3 inches all sides)
  • Avoid trim seams, hinges, locks, and curved body lines that distort letters

Common Mistakes That Fail Inspection

  1. Sub-2-inch letters. Even β…›-inch under fails the rule.
  2. Decorative fonts. Inspectors reject script/italic by default.
  3. Low contrast. Dark gray on a black truck is not “sharp contrast.”
  4. Decals on glass. Door panel placement only.
  5. Faded or peeling vinyl. Even compliant install fails once legibility degrades.

FAQ

Does FMCSA require a specific font?

No. The rule is “readily legible during daylight, from a distance of 50 feet.” Helvetica Bold, Arial Black, and Impact in upper-case all pass.

Can I use a 2.5-inch decal to be safe?

Yes; 2.5″–3″ is what most fleets use. Going larger never hurts compliance and ages better.

Are reflective USDOT decals allowed?

Yes, but the contrast still must be sharp in daylight (not just under headlights at night).

What about the carrier name above the USDOT number?

Carrier name follows the same 2-inch minimum and contrast rules. It must be the legal business name on file with FMCSA.
