How Much Does Vinyl Lettering Cost Per Inch? (2026 Pricing Guide)

Vinyl lettering pricing isn’t actually charged “per inch” anywhere; but the question is so common we built our pricing around an answer for it. Here’s what drives the price, what a typical custom job costs in 2026, and how to keep your decal under budget without sacrificing durability.

How Vinyl Lettering Is Actually Priced

Three factors decide the price:

  1. Total area, height Γ— overall length (in square inches)
  2. Vinyl grade, standard, premium cast, reflective, or metallic flake
  3. Effects, outline, shadow, gradient, dome, multi-color

The “per inch” shorthand most shops quote is really per inch of overall length at a given height. A 3-inch tall Γ— 18-inch wide line of text is one “size unit”. A 6-inch tall version of the same is roughly 4Γ— the cost, area scales as height Γ— length.

Real Pricing Examples

Job Size Vinyl Estimated price
Mailbox letter set (“Smith”) 2″ Γ— ~10″ Standard $10–$15
Truck door lettering, phone + name (1 line) 3″ Γ— 18″ Premium $18–$24 per side
Boat registration numbers (1 side) 3″ Γ— 12″ Premium $15–$20 per side
Service van wrap text (3 lines) 4″–8″ Γ— 36″ Premium $80–$140 per side
USDOT decal (carrier name + number) 2″ Γ— 24″ Premium $22–$30 per side

Reflective boat numbers 3″ Γ— 12″ Reflective $28–$36 per side

All prices include free shipping on orders $50+ in the continental US.

What Drives the Cost Up

  • Height; the single biggest factor. Going from 3″ to 6″ letters roughly doubles material cost (and quadruples scale weight).
  • Multi-color, each additional color is a separate vinyl cut + alignment step. Two-color: ~30% more. Full gradient print: ~80% more.
  • Reflective vinyl: ~2Γ— standard premium pricing.
  • Outline + shadow effects, adds layered cuts; ~20% more.
  • Domed / 3D resin; significant upcharge ($25+ per decal).
  • Custom artwork upload, design fee if logo needs vector cleanup.

How to Save Money

  1. Pick a single solid color. Two-color combos can wait for v2.
  2. Don’t oversize. 3″ letters are legible from 50′, bigger isn’t always better.
  3. Skip the shadow on small text. Looks muddy at sub-2″ anyway.
  4. Order both sides at once. Setup fee amortizes across the pair.
  5. Use the designer, not custom art upload. Custom-vector cleanup adds a design fee.
  6. Hit $50 for free shipping. Add the second-side decal or a spare set.

FAQ

Is there a minimum order?

No. We make single-decal orders. Free shipping kicks in at $50.

Are quotes for custom artwork free?

Yes, upload artwork and we send a quote within 24 hours, no obligation.
